School Counselor
Job Summary:
The High School Guidance Counselor provides comprehensive academic, social-emotional, and career guidance to students. The counselor supports students in achieving academic success, planning for post-secondary education and careers, and addressing personal or social challenges. This role requires collaboration with teachers, administrators, families, and community resources to foster a safe, supportive, and inclusive school environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Academic Counseling:
- Assist students in course selection, academic planning, and goal setting.
- Monitor student progress and intervene as needed to ensure academic success.
- Support students with individualized education plans (IEPs) and 504 plans, in collaboration with the Special Education team.
- Assist students in course selection, academic planning, and goal setting.
- College and Career Guidance:
- Provide information and counseling on college admissions, vocational training, apprenticeships, and career options.
- Assist with college applications, scholarship searches, and standardized testing preparation.

- Social-Emotional Support:
- Provide individual and group counseling to address personal, social, and emotional concerns.
- Help students develop problem-solving, decision-making, and coping skills.
- Identify students at risk and coordinate interventions with school staff and outside resources.

- Collaboration and Advocacy:
- Work closely with teachers, administrators, and families to support student success.
- Serve as a liaison between the school, families, and community organizations.
- Participate in school-wide initiatives, committees, and professional development opportunities.

- Record Keeping and Compliance:
- Maintain accurate records of counseling sessions, student progress, and interventions.
- Ensure compliance with school policies, state regulations, and ethical standards.

Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in School Counseling or related field.
- State certification/licensure as a school counselor.
- Strong knowledge of adolescent development, educational planning, and career guidance.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive situations with discretion.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in a high school setting.
- Familiarity with college admissions processes and career readiness programs.
- Training in conflict resolution, crisis intervention, and social-emotional learning.
Working Conditions:
- Full-time position during the school year with limited summer work.
- Work primarily within a school environment; occasional travel for conferences or student activities may be required.
